Grade One-Math

Folder Notes: A collection of resources, from the new learnalberta website, to support the new math curriculum.

This resource focuses on assessment practices and includes information on the types of classroom assessment; the purpose of classroom assessment; the assessment process; and assessment strategies and tools.

This Web site provides a library of interactive, Web-based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction (Kindergarten to Grade 12 emphasis). The resources are organized into the following topics: Number and Operations; Algebra; Geometry; Measurement; and Data Analysis and Probability.

In this multimedia presentation, a teacher uses an interactive whiteboard to integrate technology into a Grade 1 mathematics lesson on equality and inequality, and a Grade 2 lesson on number sense. Students then work with manipulatives to further their understanding of these concepts.

This resource highlights current research on learning mathematics. Topics include: mathematical proficiency; number sense; computational fluency; mathematical reasoning; mathematical conversation; metacognition; learning styles; and math anxiety.

This resource assists teachers with planning for instruction. Topics addressed include: creating an effective mathematics environment; creating meaningful activities; understanding the progression of mathematical understanding; models in the mathematics classroom; developing algebraic reasoning; integrating problem solving; using technology in the mathematics classroom; and differentiating instruction. A list of recommended resources is also provided.

This is a step-by-step guide designed to assist teachers with planning mathematics instruction for Grade 1 Specific Outcomes 4, 5, 6—Number. Five steps are presented: identifying outcomes to address; determining evidence of student learning; planning for instruction; assessing student learning; and, following up on assessment. It also includes Sample Activities for Teaching Number.
