Big Ideas

  • Multiplication and division of fractions is similar to multiplication and division of whole numbers.
  • Estimation of multiplication and division helps fraction computations make sense.
  • For multiplication by a fraction, it is useful to recall that the denominator is a divisor
    (Van de Walle and Lovin 2006, p. 66).
  • For division by a fraction, the two ways of thinking about the operation—partitive model (equal-sharing) and measurement model (equal grouping)—are very important
    (Van de Walle and Lovin 2006, p. 66).
