Curriculum Focus

This sample targets the following changes in the curriculum:

• The General Outcome focuses on number sense, whereas the previous mathematics curriculum specified applying arithmetic operations on whole numbers and illustrating their use in creating and solving problems.
• The Specific Outcome focuses on listing mental strategies that may be used in determining number facts, whereas the previous mathematics curriculum specified mental strategies as one choice in a list of methods for multiplication and division.

Multiplication and Division Part A addresses the following outcomes from the Program of Studies:

4. Apply the properties of 0 and 1 for multiplication and the property of 1 for division. 5. Describe and apply mental mathematics strategies, such as: skip counting from a known fact using doubling or halving using doubling or halving and adding or subtracting one more group using patterns in the 9s facts using repeated doubling to determine basic multiplication facts to 9 × 9 and related division facts.

What is a Planning Guide?

Planning Guides are a tool for teachers to use in designing instruction and assessment that focuses on developing and deepening students' understanding of mathematical concepts. This tool is based on the process outlined in Understanding by Design, by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe.
