Term (Sequences and Series)

Definition

A term is any individual member of a sequence or series.

Sequence Example One

Given the sequence below, the first term is three, the second term is five, the third term is seven and the last term is eleven.

3, 5, 7, 9, 11

Series Example One

Given the series below, the first term is one, the second term is one, the third term is two, the fourth term is three, the fifth term is five and the last term is eight.

1 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 5 + 8

Sequence Example Two

Given the sequence below, the first term is 4x + y, the second term is 3x + 2y, the third term is 2x + 3y and the last term is x + 4y.

4x + y, 3x + 2y, 2x + 3y, x + 4y

Series Example Two

Given the series below (with a common difference of two), the first term is two, the second term is four, the third term is six, the fourth term is eight, the fifth term is ten, the sixth term is twelve, and so on.

2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + ...
