What your teen is learningYour teen will distinguish, rephrase, criticize and comment on what they read and hear. They will discuss the ideas stated as well as the language used in articles, news items, documentaries, letters and position papers. Group work focuses on discussion, and your teen will share ideas while developing skills for working with others. In writing and presentations, they’ll be more descriptive. Their short stories will include images that make the reader feel the emotions they want to communicate. For more about Grade 9 French Language Arts, refer to the program of studies. How your teen is assessedYour teen’s learning is assessed using a variety of tools and strategies within the classroom. Ask your teen’s teacher what methods they are using. The different assessment methods tell you and your teen’s teacher about your teen’s strengths, the areas in which they might grow and how well your teen is doing throughout the course. The teacher can then change or refine their teaching plans to ensure that learning activities better meet the needs of your teen. At the end of this course, your teen will write a Provincial Achievement Test, which provides information about your teen’s achievement compared with the achievement of students in the same grade from across the province. The purposes of Provincial Achievement Tests are to:
Provincial Achievement Test results can help Alberta Education better understand the factors that influence student achievement. This information can also provide teachers, principals, central office staff and Alberta Education with additional tools to help students and parents in the learning process. Teachers will often use this information to reflect on how the course has been taught and how to better assist students’ learning, and they may use it to report on your teen’s level of achievement.
