Gena Kolay

Gena Kolay is the fourth youngest in a family of twelve, born and raised in the wilds of the northwestern corner of Alberta. Her traditional education (childhood to adulthood) came from her parents, both sets of grandparents and from living with elders, older extended family members and older siblings.

Additional traditional skills and knowledge came from years of interviewing elders on historical and current issues and translating stories and legends.

Ms. Kolay began her educational journey with eight years in a residential school and went on to earn a BA in Native Studies (focusing on self-government) with a minor in Sociology and a BEd in Elementary Education.
