Global Prosperity and Sustainability

10-1: To what extent does globalization contribute to sustainable prosperity for all people?
10-2: Does globalization contribute to sustainable prosperity for all people?

Synopsis

The specific outcomes for General Outcome 3 "Students will assess economic, environmental and other contemporary impacts of globalization" may be addressed by inviting students to consider the degree to which globalization enhances or inhibits sustainable prosperity for all people.

Critical Challenges

Students might explore this overarching theme by completing these challenges:

Students examine the implications of globalization by selecting the five events of the past 15 years that have had the most significant impact on creating sustainable prosperity globally

Students explore the economic foundations of globalization by writing an open letter to the international community to persuade international bodies on the need either for greater liberalization or for greater regulation of market forces

Students explore the relationship between countries and transnational corporations by assessing the extent to which the operations of selected transnational corporations support a country's basic obligations to its citizens and by generalizing about the compatibility of a country's interests and corporate interests

Students learn about the competing economic, environmental and cultural interests raised by globalization by preparing and negotiating solutions to a particular land use issue that are acceptable to various stakeholder groups

As a possible culminating activity, students might draw together what they have learned about the implications of globalization by formulating and defending a position on the degree to which students should embrace or resist globalization

Students explore the implications of various strategies for promoting economic globalization, e.g., trade liberalization, outsourcing, privatization, by developing policy guidelines that seek to maximize the opportunities and minimize the challenges for various groups who may be affected
