Showing Respect

In what ways can I show respect to others and to the environment?

Synopsis

Many of the outcomes dealing with respect for others found under:

General Outcome K.1, "I Am Unique," may be addressed by helping students interact thoughtfully with others, and appreciate the differences in each other and in other cultures. The goal is to help students recognize the many occasions when they can be of help to others and to appreciate the kinds of choices they make that affect others.

Each of the activities in the Critical Challenges builds on students' understanding of the personal qualities and actions that support a healthy social and physical environment.

Critical Challenges

Students might explore this overarching theme by completing these challenges:

Reinforce appropriate ways of responding to others by identifying respectful responses to scenarios they may commonly encounter

Consider their role in helping a student who is new to the classroom by comparing the experiences of a newcomer with their own experiences on their first day of school

Extend their understanding of helping actions by learning to distinguish actions that are required "jobs" (expected duties) from those that are "acts of kindness"

Learn to resolve interpersonal problems by recognizing which responses to various problem situations best reflect the qualities of a friendly person

Learn to care about the physical environment by identifying and implementing an action to enhance the school environment

Learn about the power of kindness by creating a "chain of kind acts" that members of the class will pass along from one student to another
