Lois Hole (1933-2005)

On December 9th, 1999, Prime Minister Jean Chretien, appointed successful businesswoman, best selling author, education advocate and community supporter, Lois Elsa Hole as Alberta's 15th Lieutenant Governor. She is the second woman in Alberta's history to serve as Lieutenant Governor.

Her Honour served as a school trustee for the St. Albert School District #6 from 1981 to the fall of 1998. She previously served, for fourteen years, as a trustee and chairperson for the Sturgeon School Division and, for eleven years, as a member of the Athabasca University Governing Council.

As Chancellor of the University of Alberta, Her Honour served as the titular head of the University, chairing all Senate meetings, serving as a member of the Board of Governors, representing the University at all ceremonial occasions and presiding over convocation to confer all degrees.

The Lieutenant Governor has been recognized for her ongoing contributions to libraries, education and the arts by the establishment of The Lois Hole Library Legacy Program (2002), The Alberta School Boards "Lois Hole Lecture Series" (2003) and the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Program (2003).
