Assessing Web Site Credibility

This modelling the tools is incorporated into critical challenges at grades 6, 10, 11 and 12, however, it can be adapted for use at all grade levels.

Assessment

The Modelling the Tools lessons can be used for a range of grade levels. Although this chart contains only the learner outcomes for Grade 10, there is considerable alignment of these outcomes with those in other grades. Check the current program of studies for grade level outcomes.

Assessment for Learning (Formative)
Formative assessment provides opportunities for students to receive feedback. Formative feedback is used solely to help students improve their performance.

Ask students to use the Rubric for Evaluating Web Site Credibility to guide their work as they complete the task of evaluating a Web site. Encourage students to identify areas of strength as well as areas for improvement. Students could work with peers to provide coaching as to how they could provide more specific and detailed evidence. Teachers can provide specific and descriptive feedback to students on their initial Web site evaluation.

The purpose for these formative opportunities is to help students become aware of how to increase the quality of the evidence they provide and to draw plausible conclusions based on sound evidence. These ungraded opportunities for reflection and goal setting will help students improve their performance on subsequent tasks.

Assessment of Learning (Summative)
Summative assessment takes place after instruction and after students have had a chance to practise and receive feedback on their work. Summative assessment provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they know and can do.

The Rubric for Evaluating Web Site Credibility can be used to evaluate student performance on subsequent tasks where students are evaluating and/or comparing Web site credibility.
