Language Proficiency Assessment

Additional Assessment of English Language Learners

The acquisition and development of English language proficiency is often a gradual process and student progress should be assessed on an individual basis (see Considerations for Assessing Language Proficiency). In some cases, there may be indications that the English language proficiency development of a student is being limited by other factors; e.g., language acquisition difficulty, attention difficulties, learning disability, trauma, memory problem, cognitive disability. An additional type of assessment may be required when a student shows limited progress between benchmark levels (e.g., more than 18 months on one benchmark level).

In these instances, the school may conduct additional language proficiency assessments and in-depth observations to identify factors that may be affecting the rate or way in which the student’s English language proficiency is developing. This additional assessment may assist in identifying additional supports and inform instruction for the student.
