  • costs
  • dangers
  • rewards
Student Example

Student writing assessment exemplar:

Yes, it’s important to see many problemss that we need to understand. People must learn about space and those who
go to space receive rewards from the government.
Also
there are many things that the government needs to know
and understanding space is important period. But it can be
dangerous and very expensive for the people. And the
government is willing to pay for these missions but that
money can be used to help people on earth. It’s good for
us to know about everything the moon, stars, and
asteroids. Space exploration is also exciting for everyone.
Astronauts go to space and they show us things like earth
from above and new planets. This makes many people
interested in science. School can teach more about space
so we can learn and dream big. Learning about space
helps us ask questions about how we can live better on
our planet or if we can find new life in space. It’s fun to
imagine what to find in the future.

Level 2: Uses more high-frequency and a few low-frequency descriptive words (important, problemss [problems], dangerous, expensive, everything, exciting, new, many, big, better), instructional words (pay, teach, learn, dream, ask), and synonyms/antonyms (understand/know)

Level 3: Uses a variety of simple (It’s fun to imagine what to find in the future.) and familiar compound sentence types (People must learn about space and those who go to space receive rewards from the government.)

Level 2: Uses more high-frequency connector words, markers (sequence), and phrases to organize ideas (and, also, there, but) and add detail (many, above)

Next Steps

After determining English proficiency levels, teachers can refer to the Supporting Competency Indicators found in Benchmarks 2.0 for strategies to inform programming and instruction of EAL learners in all subjects. Once a student demonstrates Level 2 indicators, the teacher refers to Level 3 for planning instruction.

Example: Providing and supporting the use of graphic organizers and templates for the student to create paragraphs on specific topics (Writing Supporting Competency: Strategic Writing Characteristics).
